About the Role
As a Remote Director for Live Sports Broadcasts, you will be responsible for leading the technical coordination of live, remote games, working closely with school and college sports production divisions to ensure continuity and quality. You will collaborate with Producers and Planning Producers to determine the creative and technical direction of live remote game broadcasts, and work with the Event Operations division to determine technical facility and personnel needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide guidance to schools on all aspects of TV production, leveraging your extensive experience in the truck, including AP and Replay responsibilities, producer and director roles, as well as a deep understanding of technical below-the-line jobs.
- Liaise with school production partners to provide timely feedback on student-produced content, visiting school production partner grounds to review equipment compliments, discuss and recommend industry-standard production procedures, and provide a channel for guidance for school administrative staff.
- Design, coordinate, and execute live productions of live, remote games, properly documenting assigned events and making on-the-spot decisions regarding picture and sound selection.
- Work with the Producer and Operations team to determine camera placement at each setting, designing and executing the capture of desired shots, live-to-tape builds, and sequences of shots.
- Collaborate with engineering professionals to integrate all elements in a broadcast, including graphics, enhanced technology elements, switcher effects, composite music, and more.
- Coordinate the technical teams and consultants assigned to remote events, conducting production and technical meetings to define team responsibilities and expectations.
- Partner with the Manning division to allocate production technical teams for assigned live events, providing post-event feedback and constructive criticism to the Event Operations team and Manning office on assigned team members.
- Conduct research on teams, players, storylines, trends, and more to stay informed on each game/sport assigned.
- Provide guidance to live talent prior to broadcasts and guide them, as needed, during broadcasts.
- Make on-the-spot editorial adjustments to coverage plans as unexpected circumstances and opportunities arise.
- Troubleshoot, on-the-spot, operational issues that arise during assigned live remote games.
- Ensure that all advertisements and promotions for all assigned productions are accurately inserted.
- Participate in the development of the concepts and content of assigned games to reach viewers and increase market penetration and viewership.
- For assigned live remote games, interface and communicate as needed with conferences, associations, school/college staff, coaches, players, and more.
- Maintain ongoing communications with third-party vendors, e.g., talent, production companies, to secure required services, equipment, and elements, resources, parts, and data for assigned live remote games.
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
- A valid driver's license.
- Knowledge of real-time live game coordination processes.
- The ability to clearly and concisely communicate to all team members during the live broadcast.
- Knowledge of the technical equipment involved in coordinating live remote games.
- Top-notch live remote game coordination skills.
- Knowledge of teams and sports history.
Preferred Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Understanding of the financial implications of coordinating live remote games.
- Passion for popular culture, e.g., "what's cool" and helps with defining the preferences of ESPN's viewers.
- Understanding of the market positioning and strategies of assigned games.
- Willingness to travel as required.
