JOB SUMMARY:
Writing Mentors, under the supervision of the Writing Center Coordinator, provide tutoring to students seeking to become stronger writers and better self-editors. Available positions include weekly in-person shifts on campus during business hours, typically five hours per week. Training will be provided upon hiring for SBTS style and writing coaching.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provides one-on-one tutoring in the Writing Center and/or online to help writers at all levels of proficiency develop their writing skills
• Provides written comments to papers submitted online to assist writers at all levels of proficiency remotely develop their writing skills
• Provide clear guidance and feedback for writing concerns, such as: thesis development, organization, clarity, conciseness, grammatical accuracy, punctuation, footnotes, bibliography entries, etc.
• Help present practical writing workshops focused on specific topics such as Southern style formatting, common errors for ESL students, and how to avoid plagiarism
• Works on Writing Center projects assigned by the Writing Center Coordinator
• Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Writing Center Coordinator
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Proficiency in writing and a demonstrated mastery of writing conventions such as syntax,
grammar, punctuation, and spelling
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Google Suite
• Willingness to learn Turabian and Chicago Manual of Style
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly
• Ability to work independently in a remote setting
• Excellent customer service skills: patience, flexibility, and desire to help
• Recommendation from someone familiar with your writing
EDUCATION:
The person in this position must have a bachelor's degree or fifth year in Boyce Seminary Track student. English undergraduate degree is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Previous writing center experience or teaching experience is preferred.
