We are seeking a skilled and experienced Mid-Level WordPress Developer to join our dynamic, collaborative development team for a project at the Department of Veteran Affairs. This position requires strong proficiency in modern WordPress development, a deep understanding of WordPress Core, and hands-on experience contributing to sprint-based agile teams. The ideal candidate will help us build scalable, secure, and user-centric websites using the latest block-based editing paradigms and modern WordPress architecture.
You will work alongside developers, designers, and analysts to plan, implement, and maintain high-quality WordPress projects, and play a key role in technical decision-making, documentation, and team enablement.

Key Responsibilities
• Block and Pattern Development
• Build and maintain reusable custom WordPress blocks and patterns using
@wordpress/create-block and modern APIs.
• Apply best practices in Full Site Editing (FSE), including use of theme.json, block
templates, and template parts.
• Document and demonstrate reusable components for use across multiple projects.
• Codebase Architecture & DevOps Support
• Suggest and implement improvements in repository structure, build tooling (e.g., SCSS
setup), and code organization.
• Collaborate on continuous integration, testing, and deployment workflows.
• Project Lifecycle Involvement
• Contribute to sprint planning and sprint reviews.
• Participate actively in daily stand-ups and demonstrate work in bi-weekly stakeholder
demos.
• Manage GitHub tickets in alignment with SCRUM best practices (e.g., creating,
updating, resolving, commenting).
• Technical Documentation & Team Enablement
• Write clear, concise documentation for technical implementations and usage
guidelines.
• Support and coach team members in using custom-built tools and patterns effectively.
• Code Quality & Maintenance
• Conduct code reviews and refactor legacy code to improve readability and
maintainability.
• Maintain high standards of performance, scalability, and security for all WordPress
builds.
• 3–5 years of professional WordPress development experience.
• Strong understanding of Core WordPress internals (hooks, filters, WP_Query, etc.).
• Proficient in PHP, HTML, CSS (SASS nice to have), and JavaScript (ES6+), React.
• Demonstrated experience developing custom themes and plugins from scratch.
• Familiarity with WordPress REST API and modern JavaScript tools.
• Solid grasp of security best practices, performance optimization, and accessibility.
• Comfortable working in agile teams and communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• U.S. Citizenship and residence required (no exceptions).
Preferred
• Experience working with Git, GitHub, and version control workflows.
• Experience with third-party API integration.
• Familiarity with WordPress site migrations and multisite environments
