Milkweed Editions is seeking a Part-Time Copy Editor to join our editorial team. This role is essential in ensuring that our published works maintain the highest standards of quality, clarity, and coherence. The ideal candidate will have a passion for literature, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to enhancing the voices of the authors we publish. Responsibilities • Editing: Review and edit manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, style, and consistency, ensuring alignment with Milkweed’s publishing standards. • Proofreading: Conduct thorough proofreading of proofs and final layouts to identify and correct typographical errors and formatting issues. • Collaboration: Work closely with authors, editors, and other team members to address changes and revisions effectively and promptly. • Feedback: Provide constructive feedback to authors regarding their work, enhancing clarity and engagement while respecting their voice. • Research: Verify facts and references within manuscripts to ensure accuracy and credibility. Qualifications • Education: Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field. Equivalent experience will also be considered. • Experience: At least 2 years of experience in copy editing, preferably in a publishing environment. • Skills: • Strong command of the English language and grammar rules. • Familiarity with style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style). • Proficient in editing software and collaborative tools (e.g., Google Docs, Word). • Attributes: • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills. • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. • A passion for literature and an understanding of Milkweed Editions’ mission. Compensation and Work Schedule • Hours: The position is part-time, approximately 10-15 hours per week with flexibility in scheduling. • Compensation: Competitive hourly wage based on experience.
